Math and writing. Reading and spelling. These are things we all grew up doing in school. As we grew older, our knowledge of these subjects grew and expanded but one thing remained the same. Through practice and by doing, we gained skills and mastered concepts that would serve us for years to come.
Today’s student is no different than we were. They search for the same answers we now take for granted. They engage in the same struggles that marked our learning years and shaped our intellectual growth. While their work is much the same as ours was, the tools that they must wield have changed dramatically. Where we employed pencil and paper, they now use the computer. Where we searched for answers in a library, they now swim in the vast sea of information that the Internet has become.
Technology has changed how the student of today learns and has mandated a fundamental change in the way they are to be taught. Preparing students for achievement in the classroom of today as well as for success in the workplace of tomorrow demands an education rooted not only in the three R’s that you and I grew up with, but one that also encourages and guides that student in the proper use of technology.
With that as our focus, we strive to effectively integrate technology into the curriculum of all of our students, from Pre-K through High School. Technology in our school buildings should not only expand the attainable goals of the student but it should also inspire and empower the teacher to set and attain even higher standards for all students.
To that end, we are constantly appraising and evaluating our current use of technology and future technology needs. This involves not only future purchases and implementation, but also training and preparation of staff to take full advantage of the tools we set before them.
Technology allows us the unique opportunity to present our children with experiences that they would not have otherwise. Through these experiences, we can offer an ever-broadening horizon of instructive possibilities to learn through both doing and sharing.
