USD 495 Stakeholders,
As you may know from the parent survey that was shared earlier this semester, the school district has begun its' first year in the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation process. This process replaces the previous accreditation process of accountability through student assessment. This is an exciting new day in Kansas as education moves toward focusing on the outcomes of the whole child rather than a small sample data point.
As part of KESA and its' accreditation process, in USD 495 we are taking steps to ensure that our students have the academic preparation, cognitive preparation, technical skills, employability skills, and civic engagement that is necessary to be successful citizens. To do that, the district will address areas of social/emotional factors, kindergarten readiness, individual plans of study, graduation rates, and postsecondary success so that it can track results during the course of students' educational experience. Additionally, the district will examine the areas of relationships, relevance, responsive culture, and rigor within our operations to enhance the success of our systems.
Beginning today and throughout the course of this process, it will be my aim to update you on the workings of the district on these items and what our current status is within KESA. Today, I am contacting you to provide reference on how we got to this point.
Attached you will find two documents detailing the specifics on what goes into the KESA process.
The first document, titled "Rose Capacities," are the specifics listed within Kansas State Statute that determine what Kansas students need to learn within our educational system. These 7 items provide the basis for our educational benchmarks and the outcomes for each student within a Kansas school district.
KESA Vision Infographic.pdf
The second document, titled "KESA Vision," is the infographic that details all of the specifics that are evaluated within the KESA accreditation process. Make notice of the specifics listed as outcomes for a successful high school graduate in the state of Kansas. These outcomes, coupled with the 5 state board of education outcomes listed under "Results," drive our current focus within the district. From these items, we are formulating short-term and long-term goals in order to address these areas.
Thank you for your time in learning more about our district's current direction and the tasks that we are undertaking. If you were to have any questions about education within USD 495, please do not hesitate to contact me!

As we are beginning the 5 year process of gaining official accreditation through the Kansas Department of Education, one of the first steps to be taken within this process is to gain input on our school district from the community. Below is a link to a short 16 question Needs Assessment Survey.
The survey is based upon the four areas of "Evidence-Based Practice" and their subcategories determined by KSDE's process - the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation. As mentioned, it is a short survey that requires you to rate the school district either "Good," "Average," or "Poor" on 16 criteria areas.
Your input is greatly valuable to our process in making our district successful and very much appreciated!
